April

Bali:

April is the hottest month in Bali as the wet season is replaced by the dry. This is one of the best months to visit the island as humidity levels are dropping, sunshine has chased away the showers and the peak tourist season has not yet begun. The beaches are often very quiet at this time of year and the sea wonderfully warm. April is also a good month to visit the mountain villages of the interior, where the altitude will keep you cool.

The end of March and beginning of April (depending on the date of the full moon) in Bali is the time for Nyepi, a major purification ritual in the Hindu calendar. The eve of Nyepi is not to be missed, as locals drive evil spirits away from their villages in colourful parades before the start of the new year. Nyepi itself is a day of silence across the island.

Cambodia:

April is a hot, dry month in Cambodia and the ideal time to forget about the country's tourist attractions and head for the coastal beaches and islands to cool down.

The middle of April sees Khmer New Year arrive and the locals spend three days preparing for a fresh start and celebrating the start of a new year with water and talcum powder fights.

Hong Kong:

In April temperatures start to rise in the city but the rainfall and humidity are still relatively low, making it one of the best months to explore the city without feeling too hot. Outdoor activities are popular and the beaches are coming to life.

Laos:

April is the hottest month in Laos when temperature can hit 36°C during the day in Vientiane and the lowlands. Luang Prabang and the hills remain cooler and rainfall will not interrupt your travels for long.

The country grinds to halt in mid-April for three days to celebrate Lao New Year with water-fights, house-cleaning and colourful processions.

Malaysia:

A very warm month across the country with low rainfall. The beaches are at their best around this time of the year and less crowded.

April is an excellent month to visit the highlands and escape the heat.

Myanmar:

A good month to visit the hill stations or the coast to escape the high temperatures of the plains.

The Philippines

A dry month across the country but temperatures and humidity are at their peak.

A good time to visit the hills or the underwater world, where visibility is excellent.

Easter/Holy Week is celebrated with a huge variety of rituals and colourful celebrations across the islands.

Singapore:

April is a hot and relatively dry month on the island but the winds are starting to drop so things can get very sticky outside the air-conditioned shops and restaurants.

Thailand:

April is another generally dry month across Thailand but temperatures are at their highest and the monsoon rains may arrive on the western coasts towards the end of the month. The beaches of the gulf will provide cooling relief from the heat of Bangkok.

Songkran, the exuberant celebration of the Thai New Year, arrives sometime in April. If you take part, expect to get wet.

Vietnam:

A great month for visiting the Vietnamese central coast and the north, which is warm and dry, although the rain is starting to increase. The south of the country is at its hottest in April.
