This volcanic island first found fame when it stood in for the magical island of Bali Hai in the 1958 movie South Pacific. Since then word of its tranquil beauty has spread around the world and turned it into a popular island getaway, but don't worry, this densely forested island remains sparsely inhabited, and the wildlife both on land and in the sea are carefully protected from over-development.

Tioman is the largest of the islands that form the Tioman Marine Park and lies 56km off the coast of Pahang in the south east of Peninsular Malaysia. According to legend it represents the final resting place of a beautiful dragon princess, who rested in the area and loved it so much she never left. Her horns are still visible in the twin peaks of Bukit Nemak and Samukant. The island's warm waters and good visibility make it a must-visit destination for underwater explorers, but the cross-island hike from Tekek to Juara is also very popular as it can be completed in one day and takes in both the rainforest jungle, which teems with mammal and bird life, and beach views of both sides of the island.
