For centuries Pattaya was a small fishing village on the Gulf of Thailand, but in the 1960s American servicemen on R&R breaks from the Vietnam War discovered its seaside charms. Soon hotels replaced huts along the beach, and fishermen started using their boats to ferry the tourists around. The resort consists of three beaches: Jomtien in the south, famous for its water sports, the quieter Naklua Bay in the north, and then there's Pattaya Beach in the middle with its neon-lit ``bar beers'' and Walking Street of restaurants and shops. Away from the beaches you'll find unique attractions such as Mini Siam and the Sanctuary of Truth, sports opportunities galore and the beautiful uninhabited island of Ko Lan, only a short ferry ride from shore.
