Lying on the Straits of Malacca at the southern end of Peninsular Malaysia, this colourful port and was the centre of the Malay world in the 15th and the 16th centuries before falling to the Portuguese, Dutch and British empires in succession because of its prime position along the spice route from Asia to Europe.
