The tranquil watery expanse of Inle Lake can be found in the middle of the country, over 1300m above sea level and among the blue-tinted Shan Hills. It is accessible from an airport close by at Heho and is home to more than a dozen villages belonging to the Intha people, who fish and cultivate gardens of water hyacinths on the lake. A trip by canoe across the lake will take you to waterside pagodas, floating markets and the villages, where you can see the local people engaged in cottage industries such as silk-weaving.
